Reports had been coming out throughout the season that the Chicago Bulls were actively seeking trade targets for their bigs in return for a solid wing player. All of Pau Gasol, Taj Gibson & Joakim Noah were reportedly available to be traded just a month ago.
Now with Noah’s season ending shoulder injury and Nikola Mirotic undergoing an emergency appendectomy himself, the Bulls have no choice but to stand pat with their big men.
Gasol, Gibson and Portis are the only reliable big men the Bulls have right now, at least until Mirotic is able to return – which is projected to be after missing 8 games.
Gasol also has a player option at the end of this season and is expected to become a free agent due to the impending spike in the salary cap. According to Marc Stein of ESPN, the Bulls will focus on re-signing the indispensable big man to another long term contract.
Pau is averaging 16.7 points, 10.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 2.1 blocks, 47% shooting from the field and 79.5% shooting from the free throw line. One can argue he should be an All-Star again this season.
